Other Important Insurance Coverages

General Liability Insurance

This coverage is limited to liability claims of bodily injury or property damage. Coverage is provided for accidents on your premises or at your customer's location. Many of your client contracts also refer to these policies as Commercial or Comprehensive General Liability. These policies exclude coverage for errors and omissions claims which are related to the delivery of your professional services.

General Liability insurance protects your business against financial loss resulting from claims of injury or damage caused to others by you or your employees. Some of the coverages below may not be available in all policies or all states.

  • Personal and Advertising Injury. Covers you for certain offenses you or your employees commit in the course of your business, such as libel, slander, disparagement, or copyright infringement in your advertisements.
  • Defense Costs. Pays legal expenses for certain liability claims brought against your business regardless of who’s at fault.
  • Automatic Additional Insured. Coverage is automatically provided when required in a written contract, agreement or permit.
  • Medical Expenses. Pays the applicable medical costs if someone is injured and needs medical treatment due to an accident on your premises.
  • Premises and Operations Liability. Provides coverage for bodily injury and property damage sustained by others at your premises or as a result of your business’s operations.
  • Tenant’s Liability. Protects your business against claims of damage due to fire or other covered losses caused by you to premises that you rent.

Business Property Insurance

We have listed just a few of the important ways business property coverage can help you in the event of an insured loss. Some coverages may not be available in all policies or all states.

  • Computer Hardware & Software - Provides coverage for your computers, peripheral devices and media. Coverage is also provided for the costs to research, replace or repair lost or damaged data and software as a result of covered damage to computer equipment, certain power failures, or a computer virus. Business Interruption Coverage will also apply to computer equipment, data and software if it is purchased.
  • Business Interruption - Reimburses you for your actual loss of earnings for up to 12 months resulting from a covered loss to your property. Extra expenses needed to continue operations.
  • Property of Others - Protects you against loss or damage to the property of others that is in your possession at a project site or on your premises. This coverage would respond to claims for accidental damage to customer equipment in your care, custody or control. If you provide computer installation, system integration, or network maintenance services, this coverage is a very important protection tool.
  • Business Personal Property (Contents) - Provides coverage for furniture, fixtures, merchandise, materials, and all other personal property owned by you and used in your business.
  • Laptop - Provides coverage for laptop computer, PDA and similar portable computer equipment anywhere in the world, including while in transit.
  • Equipment Breakdown - Covers the cost to repair or replace equipment, such as computers, air conditioners, phone systems and steam boilers, following a loss or damage caused by mechanical breakdown or artificially generated electrical current.

Hired Auto & Non-Owned Auto

Coverage is typically added as an endorsement on a General Liability policy. When there are no vehicles titled in the company name this coverage will meet the contract requirement for Commercial Auto coverage.

Hired Auto coverage replaces or augments the liability coverage offered by auto rental agencies. However, the vehicle must be rented in your company's name and this does not replace the physical damage coverage that applies to any damage you cause to the vehicle you are renting. You should still obtain physical damage coverage from the rental agency.

Non-Owned Auto coverage protects your company in the event that your company is sued as a result of an auto accident that you or one of your employees has in a personal vehicle while on company business. This coverage will not protect you or your employee personally, only your personal auto policy will do that.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance

This coverage is required in most states to provide protection for your employees that are injured while working in the scope of their employment. It provides medical and disability coverage for work related injuries or illness. In many states principals such as owners, officers and partners can exclude themselves from worker's compensation coverage. In many states, 1099 employees (Independent Contractors) may have the right to make a claim against your Worker’s Compensation policy. We can assist with developing contract language that can reduce your exposure to this type of claim.

Employer's Liability coverage - The Workers’ Compensation policy also provide Employer's Liability coverage. This coverage protects the company in the event that an employee alleges that the employer's negligence or failure to provide a safe workplace was the cause of the employee's injury or illness.

Umbrella Liability (Or Excess Liability)

This policy provides additional coverage when the limits of insurance on an underlying policy are exceeded. An umbrella policy will provide additional coverage to your General Liability, Owned Auto, Hired and Non-owned Auto Liability, and Employer's Liability policies. Please note that Umbrella coverage will not apply to the Professional Liability policy.
